Chapter 9

Michael could have kissed the instructor for letting them out of the final day of class at noon. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt so tired. Never again would he sign up for a class without making sure it didn’t fall on his long week at work. As if it wasn’t bad enough that he had to flip flop from work to class for three days straight, he had a paramedic student that needed babysitting. Aside from the fact that Alyssa was his girlfriend, he enjoyed having her as a student because she was efficient and actually made his job easier. It was like having a third paramedic on the truck.

Michael stripped out of his uniform and put his clothes from the past few days directly into the washing machine. He really needed an entire day to himself. He studied himself in the bathroom mirror before he stepped into the shower. His normally clean-shaven face had three days’ worth of facial hair. He kept his light brown hair in a short cut that he usually maintained weekly, but it was clear he’d missed an appointment as he ran his hand over the back of his head and felt hair where there usually was next to nothing. His icy blue eyes were less noticeable above the dark circles under his eyes.

He thought about his pending conversation with the clinical site director from the paramedic school while he showered off what felt like a week’s worth of filth. He had received an email the day before requesting a meeting. He assumed Eric had made a complaint. He wasn’t overly concerned because he could justify every unsatisfactory evaluation he ever gave to a student. He wasn’t going to pass him through just because he implied that he wasn’t getting the same treatment as Alyssa. Michael only hoped he could resolve everything without involving Alyssa. He hadn’t talked to her much over the past few days, so she wasn’t aware of the argument he had with Eric, or the meeting he had scheduled at her school.

He put on a pair of basketball shorts before he finally climbed into bed. He wasn’t sure he’d wake up with just his phone alarm. He hadn’t slept in his bed in three days. He was only able to shower and doze on his sofa for an hour or so between getting out of class and going to work. After he set his alarm, he sent Alyssa a text message asking her to call him at five to make sure he was awake. He fell asleep before receiving her reply.

Michael felt like he hadn’t slept for more than five minutes when his phone rang. “Hello?” he answered without even opening his eyes.

“Hey stranger. You’re alive,” he heard Alyssa’s voice.

“Hey. I’m alive. Barely,” Michael said with a raspy voice.

“What’s the emergency that you needed to wake up now? You should still be sleeping. You must be exhausted.”

Michael opened his eyes and sat up. “I’m beat. But I have a meeting at 5:30 so sleep will have to wait.
